About Mentoring

What is a mentor? What does a mentor do?

A mentor provides support, encouragement and assistance to students who are enrolled in the online training program. The mentor helps students by providing information about CNA job responsibilities, by giving constructive feedback and by acting as a general resource regarding the work and skills required of a CNA. The goal is to increase student completion rate of the online program and inrease student passage of the state certification examination.

How will I get matched with students?

Once you have been approved as a mentor for this program, the Mentor Director will assign you with a student(s), and will inform you when the student's training begins.

How many students will I be assigned to mentor?

This depends on the number of mentors recruited. However, no mentor will be assigned more than three students per term. However, you can request fewer students, if you do not have the time to mentor three students.

What are my responsibilities as a mentor?

You will be expected to contact the students on the online facebook group and/or by their email at least twice weekly during the duration of their training program. At least once every two weeks you are asked to provide a brief progress report that will be sent to the Mentor Director. Once the student has completed the program, you will submit your final progress report and evaluation. Your duty as a mentor for a student ends when the student has completed the training program. If you wish to remain in contact with the student, that is between you and the student, but it is not required by the mentor program.

Benefits of being a mentor:

  • Pass on your knowledge and provide support to students regarding nursing assistant training and the work of a CNA.
  • Receive public recognition at the annual OHCA CNA Conference.
  • Receive FREE registration to the OHCA CNA Conference (if you work for an OHCA member facility).
  • A letter of recognition and thanks will be sent your employer from the Oregon Online NAHHA Advisory CommitteeMembers after you have completed your mentoring assignment.
  • Become eligible for a prize by having your name submitted in a drawing to occur at the OHCA CNA Conference.
